Somewhere right now, a musician is squeezing the last drop of level out of a master, convinced that louder means it will hit harder on YouTube. Here is the uncomfortable truth: YouTube will simply turn it back down. The extra loudness costs you your dynamics — the breathing room, the transients, the difference between the verse and the hit of the chorus — and buys you nothing at all. Understanding one number fixes this: −14 LUFS.
What LUFS actually measures
LUFS stands for Loudness Units relative to Full Scale. Unlike a peak meter, which only tells you how tall the tallest spike in your waveform is, LUFS measures perceived loudness over time — how loud the track actually feels to a human ear. The measurement (defined in a standard called ITU-R BS.1770) filters the signal to mimic the ear's sensitivity, which cares more about midrange than deep bass, then averages the energy across the whole program. The result for an entire track is called integrated loudness, and it's the number streaming services care about.
The scale is negative because 0 LUFS would be a full-scale signal with no dynamics at all. A quiet acoustic recording might measure −20 LUFS integrated; a brick-walled modern rock master might hit −7. One loudness unit (LU) corresponds to one decibel, so the distance between those two masters is enormous — about 13 dB of perceived level.
Why −14, and what normalization does
During the loudness war of the 1990s and 2000s, every mastering engineer was pushed to out-shout the previous record, because on CD, louder genuinely sounded better on first listen. Streaming platforms ended the war with a simple mechanism: loudness normalization. The platform measures every track's integrated loudness and adjusts playback so everything lands at roughly the same perceived level. YouTube's reference is approximately −14 LUFS, and most major music platforms cluster around the same neighborhood.
The consequences are worth sitting with. If you upload a master at −8 LUFS, YouTube turns it down about 6 dB, and what remains is a track with crushed dynamics playing at exactly the same volume as everyone else's — you kept the damage and lost the loudness. Here's the equally important flip side: YouTube does not turn quiet tracks up. Upload at −20 LUFS and your video simply plays about 6 dB softer than the video before and after it. For an ambient piece that may be a deliberate choice; for a single you're promoting, it's a real disadvantage.
True peak: the other number that matters
Integrated loudness has a companion: true peak, measured in dBTP. When your digital audio gets converted back to an analog waveform — or transcoded to the lossy formats streaming uses — the reconstructed signal can swing slightly higher than the tallest sample in your file, causing distortion that never showed on your meters. The common recommendation is to keep true peak at or below −1 dBTP so the encode has headroom. A limiter with true-peak detection handles this in one setting.
How to hit the target without killing the music
The good news is that −14 LUFS is a relaxed target by loudness-war standards. You don't need to crush anything — you need to stop crushing. A practical chain: mix so your loudest sections have life in them, put a true-peak limiter at the end of the master bus with the ceiling at −1 dBTP, and adjust overall gain until your integrated reading lands around −14. Free and built-in meters abound — Youlean Loudness Meter is the free standard, and most modern DAWs now read LUFS natively. Measure the whole track, not a loop of the chorus: integrated loudness averages everything, so a dynamic arrangement with quiet verses can have choruses that hit noticeably harder than −14 and still land on target overall.
Genre matters, too. Dense pop and metal masters often live at −9 or −10 LUFS for artistic reasons, and being turned down a few dB is a price their producers accept. Jazz, classical, and ambient work — the music I've spent my life playing — tends to sit naturally near or below the target already, and benefits most from leaving the dynamics alone. The target is a reference point, not a law. The law is only this: louder than −14 gains you nothing on YouTube.
